Effective Communication is essential
Our next quarterly “Partner for Success” workshop, scheduled for August 14, will focus on Workplace Communication. Boring, you say? Essential, we assert.
Effective workplace communication is a key ingredient in retaining workers. And it is the most often cited complaint among workers, especially frontline workers. A recent survey of 7,550 frontline workers by Workvivo, an employee engagement platform owned by Zoom, found that 48% of them believe company communications are irrelevant to them, despite 69% stating they want to understand company decisions better. Perhaps more importantly, they want to be recognized for their work, yet one in five report that they never have been.
According to the study, they also feel:
Unrecognized despite feeling that they have a bigger impact than their office colleagues (49%)
Their company doesn't care about them as a person (40%)
Uncertain that company culture applies to them (87%)
Company messages feel irrelevant to their work (48%)
Communication tools feel built for office employees, not frontline staff (47%)
The report recommends five action items to address communication challenges with frontline employees:
Create a digital communication hub that works for all employees, including those in frontline jobs
Listen to your frontline employees and demonstrate that their feedback is heard and used whenever possible
Build a culture of recognition, with formal and informal shoutouts
Tailor your communication – don’t “blast” messages; send them intentionally to the appropriate audiences
Provide clear paths for career development
