(This blog includes a link to a brief survey, capturing your organization's participation level in work-based learning like internships. Please complete the survey via this link.)
Every employer is looking for talent. Yet, many overlook one of the most effective ways to develop it: creating opportunities for students to gain real-world experience before they enter the workforce full-time. For Northern Kentucky, work-based learning (WBL) is more than a workforce strategy; it's an investment in our future talent, our employers, and our regional economy.
From internships and apprenticeships to job shadows, co-ops, and industry-sponsored projects, WBL helps students develop skills, employers strengthen their talent pipelines, and communities build a workforce prepared for the future. Simply put, it's the difference between learning about work and learning through work – and the results speak for themselves.
Work-based learning benefits everyone involved:
Employers develop the talent they need, building a pipeline of future workers with relevant skills and experience.
Students gain valuable hands-on experience, helping them discover their interests, strengths, and career goals before entering the workforce full-time.
Companies often see higher retention rates among employees who previously participated in internships, co-ops, apprenticeships, or other WBL experiences.
Students perform better academically, connecting classroom learning to real-world applications and future career opportunities.
Communities become more economically competitive by producing a workforce that is both skilled and work-ready.
That's why work-based learning remains a key priority for NKY Works. To better understand the current landscape, we recently partnered with the NKY Chamber of Commerce to distribute a short survey to regional employers. We want to learn where work-based learning opportunities already exist, what barriers employers face, and where additional support may be needed.
If you have not yet completed the survey, we encourage you to take 10 minutes to share your experience. Your feedback will help identify opportunities to expand and strengthen work-based learning across Northern Kentucky. The survey will remain open through November 3 and can be accessed here.
Together, we can create more opportunities for students, support employers in meeting their workforce needs, and strengthen Northern Kentucky's talent pipeline for years to come.
