October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month
On Monday, the longtime Northern Kentucky nonprofit BAWAC officially rebranded as Proudworks. The organization serves adults with developmental, physical, and cognitive disabilities. According to President and CEO Jason Ashbrook, the new name better reflects the dignity, impact, and expanded scope of its mission, including expanding its supported employment services.
Proudworks is one of several Northern Kentucky nonprofits and government partners working to shatter stigmas about disability in the workplace while preparing individuals to be determined, focused, and valued employees. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that about 10% of residents under age 65 in Northern Kentucky—an estimated 32,700 people in Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties—live with a disability. While the severity of disabilities varies, most individuals can work successfully with appropriate accommodation.

In recognition of October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), Ashbrook, who also co-leads the NKY Works Employer Best Practices focus area, will moderate a panel discussion on the myths and realities of working with individuals with disabilities at the upcoming Partner for Success workshop on October 30, 1:30–3:00 PM.
Panelists include:
Brandon Releford, The Point Arc
Justin Banks, Easterseals/Redwood
Sarah Kring, New Perceptions
The event is free and in-person, with a remote option available upon request by emailing NKYWorks@NKADD.org. Register here.
