Talent Attraction and Retention: Staying Competitive as a Region

By Grace Riley, Talent Acquisition Specialist

As we build talent acquisition strategies across the region, it’s important to look at the research. How can communities attract real talent, despite mobility challenges? And more importantly, how can we improve retention? What’s working and what’s not?

A new “Talent Wars” report by DCI, has answers. Development Counsellors International (DCI) is a trusted agency specializing in economic development and place marketing since the 1960s.

  1. When it comes to relocation, most people fall into the “persuadable middle:” not actively seeking to move, but open to the right opportunity. This tells us that the first step to effective talent attraction/retention is strategic workforce planning. Consider whether there are opportunities for entry-level workers, upskilling, and career development within your organization.

  2. The top two barriers for relocation remain housing affordability and cost of moving. Investing in community resources and initiatives that address these challenges, or building them into your benefits package, is a step in the right direction.

  3. Quality of life remains the #1 motivator for relocation, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach to talent attraction. Organizations that support the financial security, well-being, and personal fulfillment of employees have the advantage. This requires community involvement and coordinated efforts that go beyond surface level incentives. According to the report:

“The people who are willing to move are evaluating far more than a job opportunity. They are assessing whether a community offers a lifestyle, environment, and future worth uprooting for.”

  4. Sustainable retention of talent relies on whether the needs of a household are being met. Are there pathways for employees to support the needs of their families? Access to healthcare and childcare are integral quality of life factors.
