Have You Heard of SkillsUSA?
SkillsUSA is a national workforce development organization serving more than 444,000 career and technical education students and educators across middle schools, high schools, and postsecondary institutions. Since its founding in 1965, it has supported over 15 million members—helping close the skills gap by preparing students for high-demand careers in more than 100 fields, from 3D animation to welding.
Here in Northern Kentucky, many schools actively participate in SkillsUSA, including the Campbell County and Boone County Area Technology Centers (ATCs). Throughout the year, employers partner with students to help them develop and refine projects. Students then compete at local and regional levels, advancing to state competitions—and for top performers, the national SkillsUSA Championships.
This year, four outstanding ATC students have earned a place at the national competition in Atlanta, June 1–5:
Campbell County ATC:
• Colten Faine – Action Skills (a leadership competition)
• Travis Brown – Firefighting
Boone County ATC:
• Mason O’Dwyer – Automotive Service Technician
• Maddie Smith – First Aid/CPR
Here’s the challenge: Schools cannot use operating funds to support SkillsUSA participation. Every dollar—from membership fees to travel expenses—must be raised externally.
Consider attending this car show on 5/16/26 at the Campbell Co. ATC to support their national SkillsUSA finalists.
“SkillsUSA is an incredible opportunity for our students,” said Campbell County ATC Principal Carolyn Stewart. “We cover all participation costs because many of our students come from high-poverty areas and would not otherwise be able to compete. It’s a significant investment, but one we believe is essential.”
Both ATCs are actively raising funds to send these students to nationals and are seeking corporate sponsors. Campbell County will also host a car show fundraiser on Saturday, May 16.
